Change Can Be Tough, But CapMetro’s New Payment App Makes Getting Around Easier

Let’s face it, change can be hard. We’ve all experienced it: the neighborhood grocery store resets the aisles and suddenly you can’t find the peanut butter; your phone updates and now your brightness button has moved an inch to the left; or your favorite show finally comes back for a second season with a new cast… and they have to grow on you. Adjusting takes time, and at first, it can feel frustrating. But over time, we adapt and often forget the previous patterns and habits because the new ones come to feel just as natural, sometimes even better than before.

At CapMetro, we know our customers rely on us to get where they need to go safely, affordably and efficiently. That’s why ensuring a stress-free experience is one of our top priorities. We’ve recently introduced Umo, a new fare payment system that is making riding even more convenient on Bus, Rail and Pickup, but we understand that any transition comes with challenges.

Rolling out a new system comes with a learning curve, and we apologize for any confusion or frustration our customers may have experienced along the way. That’s why CapMetro staff have been onsite at many transit stops to assist with the transition, and our customer service reps are always here to help as the system continues to get built out.

Two New Ways To Pay

  • Umo App: Add money on the app and pay per ride. No passes needed! Simply tap your phone to board, reload funds to your digital wallet anytime and enjoy automatic fare capping. This means that once you reach the equivalent of a daily or monthly pass amount, the rest of your rides are free. The Umo app offers a universal interface that works seamlessly in any city where Umo is used.
  • CapMetro Reloadable Fare Card: Pick up reloadable fare cards at your local HEB or the Transit store at 1705 Guadalupe St. The new reloadable cards also feature automatic fare capping for cost savings.

Plus, in the future, you’ll be able to Tap to Pay and directly use Apple Pay or Google Pay for additional convenience. With Tap to Pay becoming popular for everything from entering events to ordering a burger, it’s likely not the first or the last time you’ll usse this payment method. It’s designed to make transactions more convenient.

To be clear, how you pay for fares is changing, but how much you pay is not.

With these changes, automatic fare capping isn’t going away, making sure our customers whether you’re using the Umo app or the new reloadable fare card. Just be sure to use only one method, the app or the card, to get the fare capping benefit. Upgraded scanners speed up boarding, ensuring a smoother and more efficient ride. Additionally, an expanded network of participating retailers and the Transit Store will allow you to load cash onto your Umo app or Reloadable Fare Card with ease.

These updates are all part of CapMetro’s commitment to making public transit more accessible, efficient and rider friendly.
