Jacob Calhoun has been a familiar face at CapMetro for nearly a decade now. For him, what started as a deep curiosity in how to improve Austin’s notorious traffic has evolved into a meaningful career in public transit and urban planning.
His journey into public transit began when he first moved to Austin to live with his now-wife. The daily battle with traffic sparked an interest in urban planning. He saw firsthand how congestion affected daily life and wanted to be part of the solution. His passion deepened when he got the opportunity to pursue a Master’s degree in the Netherlands. It was there that he got to experience car-free living and the liberating potential of efficient public transit. This experience set into motion a commitment to improving mobility back home in Austin.
At present, Jacob’s role as the Director of Transit System Enablement at CapMetro involves office life norms—spreadsheets, emails and meetings. Yet, for him, each day brings unique challenges and opportunities. He coordinates closely with various partner agencies such as CAMPO, TxDOT, the City of Austin, and more, ensuring that transit plans align with broader urban development goals.
Outside of work, Jacob leads an active lifestyle. You can often find him biking, running or playing sports with his kids. His love for travel and culinary adventures also keeps him busy exploring new places and flavors. His favorite place to enjoy Austin’s culinary scene via public transit? Moonshine—a testament to both his love for good food and efficient transit solutions.

If you ask him what he’s most excited about for the future of public transit in Austin, he’ll tell you it’s creating a city where his kids can choose not to drive. “To be able to get around without having to drive everywhere.” Jacob dreams of a more walkable Austin with robust public transit options that make driving a choice rather than a necessity.
