CapMetro Is Ending Rear Door Boarding! Here’s Why

Beginning June 1, CapMetro is going back to front door boarding only for bus services across the system.

Rear door boarding was introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic as part of broader health and safety measures. As travel patterns and operations have continued to normalize, returning to front door boarding helps:

  • Improve safety for operators and customers,
  • Support fare compliance and
  • Create a more consistent boarding experience.

Customers boarding our bus service will once again enter through the front door near the operator unless otherwise directed for accessibility or operational needs.

Returning to front door boarding helps improve several parts of the customer experience and daily operations, including:

Better Customer Assistance

Boarding through the front door allows operators to better assist customers with questions about routes, fares and transfers while helping create a more consistent boarding experience across the system.

Improved Safety and Visibility

Front door boarding improves visibility for operators as customers board and exit vehicles and helps support a safer environment for both riders and frontline employees.

More Reliable Fare Collection

As CapMetro continues investing in transit improvements across the region, fare collection remains an important part of supporting daily operations and maintaining service for the community.

More Consistent Service

A more structured boarding process helps improve consistency across the network and supports smoother operations systemwide.

What Customers Should Expect

  • Customers should board local bus service through the front door unless using accessibility accommodations or otherwise directed by the operator.
  • Rear doors will be used for exiting the bus and the rear door scanners are being removed starting in June.
  • Customers can continue using all existing fare payment options, including cash at the farebox or participating retailers, the Umo app, Reloadable Fare Cards and Tap to Pay options where available.

We’re excited to keep building a system that’s easier, safer and more consistent for our customers.
